Candied grapefruit peel

Exposition: My Mom LOVES Mexico. More specifically she loves the beaches and spas in Mexico. She will usually take a trip down there in the Summer, and often brings me along. (My Dad HATES heat and humidity, and the sun hates him, so he stays home in the air-conditioned shade.) Our favorite hotel in the Riviera Nayarit area has the most fabulous buffet with a massive amount of ever-changing options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The Story: Well, this summer's trip happily coincided with the week our floor was being replaced (our washer exploded, but that's a whole other story). Mom and I flew out the day after my birthday (quarter life crisis, anyone?) and upon arrival quickly settled into our Mexico routine. Walk the beach early, BREAKFAST, swim and/or read, LUNCH, reading, spa, and/or more swimming, DINNER, and to bed. We were never at a loss of options for food. In fact, more often than not we would waddle to lunch groaning that we had just finished breakfast! It was a pleasant surprise if we ever felt any actual hunger walking into the buffet for a meal. Over the course of our stay, I tried many many new foods and flavors (a really big step for me every time). One evening at dinner, I came back to our table with my dessert plate loaded with tiny desserts (they change every night, so obviously I had to try them all!), and each tiny dessert was topped with chocolate shavings, pieces of fruit, slivers of nuts, etc. One of the desserts, however, was topped with a piece of something sugar coated that I didn't recognize. I had no clue what it was or could be, but it was part of a dessert, so I plucked it off the top and carefully bit a piece off the end. My mouth exploded.

Jk. But seriously, the amount of rich flavor that bloomed in my mouth was phenomenal. It was so unexpected and overpowering that I stopped everything and just kinda stared into space as I tried to assess what the heck had just taken place. The taste itself was so heady that I almost felt I could smell it just from the taste of it! (In reality it had no scent to speak of.) The taste was very sweet, but also held a lot of subtleties that my poor, shocked tongue couldn't figure out! I was so overwhelmed and confused that I couldn't even tell if I liked it or not!

Conclusion: It was like being smacked in the face with a tropical floral bouquet. But I kept eating it, so maybe I liked it? I'm looking up recipes just in case.

Final Review: 4 out of 5 stars. Willing to be gustatorily smacked with a tropical bouquet again.

 least I'm pretty sure it was grapefruit peel. Come to think of it we never did ask anyone to be sure.
