Riddick

Summary:

Rating: Unrated

Could I have watched this with my Dad? : Yes.

Could I have watched this with my Mom? : Maybe, but I don't think she would like it.

Language: Yes, but not too much.

Sex/Romance: Yes. WHY?!?!! Lots of naked women, and plenty of perv-y/rape-y junk shown and talked about.

Violence/Gore: Yes. Plenty of violence, a little less gore. (Somewhere in between Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick on the amount of gore.)

Music: Really glad to see they had Graeme Revell back yet again! He does such a fantastic job of pulling you in with strains reminiscent of the first movies and then creating a whole new feel to match a whole new movie.

Did I feel the need to leave the lights off and sit in silence afterward? : No, but I did take a minute to contemplate the let-down ending of the movie.

Was there a food pairing? : A frozen pizza with cheese-stuffed crust (because I like to forget that I am very probably lactose intolerant).

Thoughts: I cannot begin to describe how disappointed I was with this movie.

This movie moved so much slower than the previous two. It was fine, it didn't feel like it was dragging necessarily, but the other two hit the ground running and barely ever stopped for breath.

There is a character that I think we can safely assume is a lesbian as she states that she doesn't f*ck guys. She is a total badass. I love her so much. I liked her name, Dahl, until everyone kept calling her by name and I realized it sounded like everyone was calling her Doll like it was some outdated 50s movie or something. (I'm sure that wasn't on purpose, but if you're making a movie you should think about these things). Then, of course, one of the guys attempts to rape her. WHY. WHY IS IT ALWAYS ABOUT SEX WITH THE FEMALE CHARACTERS. <<<<<<<<<<SPOILER>>>>>>>>>> Riddick makes some really pervy comments to her, including what sounds like a rape threat. He says he's gonna go balls deep in her, but only because she asked for it real sweet-like. I was absolutely disgusted. Later, she tells Riddick, "Let me ask you something...sweet-like." I was so pissed. First off, she is a lesbian. That doesn't change just because. And there wasn't even anything to call a "reason" for her change of mind. They literally had to go back and rescue him. She's saving his butt and suddenly she's straight and wants to have sex with the pervert who commented on her nipple color?!?!?! NO. Just no. <<<<<<<<<<END SPOILER>>>>>>>>>>

In other female news, Riddick is shown with 4 very naked women wanting him to come back to bed. So there's that. And there is a female convict who, as it turns out, was being repeatedly raped and possibly even gang-raped by the mercs who had captured her. They were literally using their prisoner as a sex toy until they turned her in for the bounty.

I'm watching these movies for Riddick. I love his character and love seeing him in his element of clever, brutal killing glory. This movie seemed to really be missing that. While he was surviving and he did get some cool moments, it really just seemed to be lacking. And there were very few WOW moments. Either in revelations or badassery or surprise.

There is a dog-like creature. Does the dog die? <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<SPOILER>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> yes <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<END SPOILER>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

This movie was supposed to be about Riddick re-finding his "animal side." "Animal side" my butt. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<MORE SPOILERS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> He said that and then immediately adopted a pet and got attached. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<END SPOILERS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> And I never really saw any animal side. This seemed so tame compared to the other movies for the most part. If we're finding an animal side I expect brutality. I expect gruesome, hands-on gore, and a nearly feral man with a whole new edge. I got none of that.

This movie did have a great amount of bass (the walls may have been a bit shook).

We did perhaps see a bit more character development in this movie, but it wasn't great.

Overall, I'm pretty much going to pretend this movie doesn't exist and just focus on Pitch Black and the occasional thought of Chronicles.

Was this a good use of a night with the house to myself? : Meh. I guess.

In the End: 3 out of 5 stars. Come on, guys. You can do so much better.
