Total Hours to Read: 20
Sex: Mentions of rape, sex, and sex with prostitutes, but nothing very explicit until the final book. The scene in the final book is very brief and can be skimmed/skipped fairly easily.
Language: Nice work-arounds in the first book. More direct language in the second and third books.
Violence: YES. This book is based on violence (but also cunning). Very graphic descriptions of violence and gore throughout.
Thoughts: The main character is very different in that he is not meant to be a "good guy." That is not something I am used to, and I found it intriguing. This did help me to accept some of the more questionable actions of the character, keeping in mind that he was not a good guy and never claimed to be. He in fact knows and states openly that he is not good and does not do good things.
I found the world of the books really piqued my interest, as it was revealed in bits and pieces to be very different that what the reader is probably expecting. The world added a really neat twist to the story at first, and then became major plot points as the series progressed.
I was a bit disappointed with the series ending, as it didn't pack the punch I was expecting and hoping for. But, as I look back on it, the ending I was hoping for would have hit me harder emotionally, but it wouldn't have been in character, and it wouldn't fit the world or the story. So in the end, the ending was...fitting.
After I finished the final book I wondered...since the ending of the third book wasn't quite what I had hoped for, would I have been more satisfied stopping at the first book? I did, after all, state in my earlier review that I probably could have stopped at the end of the first book and been OK just imagining how the world and characters carried on afterwords. However, even though the end didn't pack the punch I wish it had, I did love all the twists the story took in the next two books. I loved the the story and character developments, and all the little details I got to learn about the world and the people in it along the way.
In the end, I really enjoyed the ride these books took me on and I would give the series four stars out of five!
