Where'd You go, Bernadette: a novel

Updated: Jan 24, 2019

Final Summary:

Total Hours to Read: 3 1/2

--Average pages per minute: 1.56

Sex: There is an affair talked about in the book. More seriously, there is a news reports given in the book that talks about the rape of thousands of women, from babies to grandmothers, and then the potential re-rape of them all. (It is about as harshly worded as I just stated it, though.)

Language: Several f-bombs, and all the lesser language that comes between dang and the f-word.

Violence: Does a very brief cat-fight count?

Thoughts: I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. I had it on my "To Read" list for a couple years, and just recently saw the movie trailer on the internet. I knew I wanted to read the book before the movie came out, so I checked it out from the library. It was an unexpectedly short read, taking less than 4 hours in total. I did spread the reading out over two days, and that added to the good amount of tension in the book! This is the first book I have read that had antagonists I could hate that much and still be able to continue reading the book and enjoy it. (Good job, Semple!)

The characters felt very honest, and it almost made me a little uncomfortable sometimes how bluntly the characters were portrayed. This was a good story, though. An interesting premise, a nice dash of mystery and a good dose of suspense, honest characters, beautiful character development, and a unique story-telling style that I haven't seen before, all came together to make a fun, quick read.

In the end: 4 out of 5 stars, a fun ride with a touching ending!
